Levitt 2012 for US Senate California Tour Gains Supporters, Donations

Levitt 2012 for US Senate California Tour Gains Supporters, Donations

Levitt analyses Middle East and Drug War costs

San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

US Senate candidate David Levitt has begun his first campaign trip, funded by new supporters on the heels of his February 14th campaign launch.

Levitt is campaigning as a Democrat in California’s new ‘top two’ Senate primary this June, where under the new rules he and 20 year incumbent Democrat Dianne Feinstein may become the only Senate candidates on the November ballot.

“We’re delighted with the response. We’re getting plenty of ballot signatures from California voters, and donations between 5 and 250 dollars from all over the country,” says campaign manager Sheila Harden.

“The contributions and enthusiasm aren’t just from California,” adds Levitt, a media scientist and software engineer who is helping lead a movement of citizen candidates who refuse corporate money. “People in places like North Carolina and New York recognize that Senator Feinstein’s disastrous financial, Middle East, civil liberties and failed drug war policies don’t just affect California. They want the nation’s largest state to represent their interests, not our past budget-busting policies and war machine.”

Law and media columnist Glenn Greenwald of Salon echoed the relief felt by some of those supporters in a widely forwarded Tweet the morning of the Levitt campaign announcement:

“The wretched, war-loving, surveillance-enabling, drug-warrior incumbent Dianne Feinstein gets a progressive challenger”

The Levitt campaign launched on Tuesday, February 14th. Highlights of the week’s campaign tour include:

on Wednesday the 15th Levitt attended the “Which Way Forward?” Public Forum held by The San Francisco 99% Coalition at the city’s Unitarian Universalist Church, with about 350 attending. During the discussion period Levitt outlined the citizen candidate movement and his own Senate candidacy. Audience applause was followed by signatures on Levitt for Senate ballot nomination forms, signed by voters from San Francisco and several neighboring counties.

on Friday at UC Berkeley, Levitt attended the opening of the Whistleblowers Conference where Pentagon Papers’ Daniel Ellsberg, Colonel Ann Wright and other whistleblowers honored WikiLeaks and its accused source Bradley Manning, who has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Levitt believes strongly in protecting whistleblowers such as WikiLeaks and other journalists who expose corruption — especially when, as even Defense Secretary Gates has confessed, the harm they are accused of causing is “overblown”.

on Saturday morning, Dr. Levitt and citizen candidates joined Coffee Party Radio / Politics Done Right host Egberto Willies on a special episode “Can We the People ‘Be Our Own Government’?” The guests were:
Jonathan Greenberg, Executive Director of BeYourGovernment.org
Jeanne van den Hurk, candidate for U.S. House in South Carolina
David Levitt, candidate for the U.S. Senate in California
Eric Reyes, candidate for U.S. House in Illinois
David Esrati, candidate for U.S. House in Ohio

also on Saturday morning, in Oakland, Levitt and other candidates spoke at “Occupy our Elections” attended by a local Occupy audience at the Grand Lake Theater. As in the San Francisco and other events, Dr. Levitt credited the Occupy movement with enlightening voters about the capture of our political class by corporate monied interests, inspiring “get the money out” consciousness, and making the citizen-fueled campaigns and candidates possible as never before.

on Sunday in Beverly Hills, Levitt met with Bruce Margolin, Director of the Los Angeles chapter of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Levitt strongly opposes marijuana prohibition and the incarceration of millions of Americans in the failed drug war.

also in Beverly Hills, Levitt met with Occupy Our Schools and founder Tara Margolin, signing a candidate pledge not to reduce funding for public education, public classrooms, or teachers’ pay. Levitt is committed to building America’s future and keeping it competitive by investing in education, infrastructure and technology.

On Saturday evening in Santa Monica, Levitt attended an event at the home of teacher, activist and former Congressional candidate Marcy Winograd, who hosted the Canadian Green Party’s Camille Labchuk. Labchuk explained how her team pulled off a historic electoral win for Elizabeth May, the first Green MP to serve in Canada’s parliament.

US Presidential candidate Rocky Anderson, running in 2012 in the newly formed Justice Party, was the second invited speaker at Winograd’s event. Anderson outlined the opportunity and duty we have to challenge and replace Republican and Democratic leaders captive to corporate interests, who have until now thwarted policies in the public interest on health care, financial regulation, military spending and climate change. Anderson received overwhelming support from the audience.

Though Winograd is no longer a Democrat and hers was officially a Green Party event, Anderson from the Justice Party and Democrat Levitt met supporters and recruited new ones from the enthusiastic crowd.

Says Levitt, “This election will be different. We’re not going to let political parties divide us, distract us, stop us or slow us down.”

8minutenergy Renewables and AES Solar to Develop 200 MW of Locally Generated Solar Energy for SDG&E Power Purchase Agreement

8minutenergy Renewables and AES Solar to Develop 200 MW of Locally Generated Solar Energy for SDG&E Power Purchase Agreement

Folsom, CA (PRWEB) February 17, 2012

8minutenergy Renewables, LLC, signed a 25-year contract to sell 200 megawatts (200MWac) of clean, renewable solar energy from the Mount Signal Solar project in Imperial Valley, Calif., to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). The transaction was conducted with 82LV 8ME, LLC, a subsidiary of 8minutenergy Renewables, a leading independent solar PV developer based in Folsom, Calif., which has a joint development agreement with AES Solar of Arlington Va., to develop and build the Mount Signal Solar project. AES Solar, a joint venture between the AES Corporation and Riverstone Holdings LLC, develops, owns and operates utility scale photovoltaic solar installations worldwide.

The Mount Signal Solar project is a large, utility-scale solar generation facility sited on 1,940 of low-productivity farmland in the Imperial Valley, Calif. The project will create nearly 450 direct jobs and more than 500 indirect jobs in Imperial County, Calif. during the 18-month construction period. The Imperial Valley currently has an unemployment rate of about 30%, which is among the highest in the country.

The Mount Signal Solar project is slated to begin delivery of renewable energy to SDG&E in mid-2013. Mount Signal Solar project’s annual production capacity of approximately 500 million kilowatt hours (kWhs) of electricity will produce enough renewable solar energy to serve 72,000 households in SDG&E’s service territory. This clean solar generation plant will displace the equivalent of approximately 356,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, which is equal to the amount that roughly 15 million trees would displace annually.

The Mount Signal Solar project will connect with SDG&E’s Imperial Valley substation, and its renewable solar energy will be transmitted over the utility’s Sunrise Powerlink transmission line, currently under construction and slated for completion in 2012.

“We look forward to delivering clean, renewable energy to over 72,000 customers of San Diego Gas & Electric,” said Martin Hermann, chief executive officer of 8minutenergy Renewables, which has over 2,000MW and 15,000 acres of private, disturbed land under development for renewable solar projects in California. “The project is located Imperial Valley, which is one of the most favorable areas for solar. It will be also one of the first to transmit power via the new Sunrise Powerlink.”

“The Mount Signal Solar project will ultimately create nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in an area with high unemployment, and produce renewable energy that will further SDG&E’s goal of helping the state meet its 33 percent RPS mandate,” said Tom Buttgenbach, president of 8minutenergy Renewables. “SDG&E and the Imperial County Board of Supervisors all played pivotal roles in the careful evaluation, planning and support of this project.”

The utility-scale solar power system for Mount Signal Solar project is comprised of state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic modules, related power electronics, and other components including an advanced tracking system that follows the sun to maximize energy production. This solar composition of large scale solar arrays is designed to feed the SDG&E electric utility grid and represents the future paradigm for large scale electrical generation.

The contract is pending approval from the California Public Utilities Commission.

New Orleans is Named as One of Only Three U.S. Destinations on New York Times Winter Getaway List

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) February 10, 2012

The New York Times recently listed New Orleans as one of only three US destinations for winter getaways that are suitable for all ages.

The article was featured in the Sunday Travel section on January 29th, 2012 in the New York edition as well as on the New York Times website.

“The awards and recognition keep rolling in for New Orleans as its tourism industry continues to grow and thrive,” said Mark Romig, President and CEO of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation. “Michelle Higgin’s article helps us emphasize that we have something to offer to all ages in New Orleans and it goes without saying that this endorsement is very powerful in attracting visitors to our city.”

The article cites hotels, restaurants, and attractions for both adults and kids. Recommended for kids are street car rides, cemetery tours, beignets and king cake as well as Mardi Gras parades during carnival season. Adults are steered toward creole cuisine, zydeco-blaring bars, live jazz and plantation tours.

“Tourism is big business for New Orleans, drawing more than 8 million visitors per year, sustaining 74,000 jobs and generating $ 5 billion annually for the local economy. The New York Times report adds to our amazing first quarter of 2012, which will go down in history as one of the best times ever for New Orleans’ tourism industry, thanks to Mardi Gras, the BCS National Championship, Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Saints and the Hornets, SEC Men’s Basketball Championship, NCAA Men’s Final Four and dozens of festivals, meetings, and conventions,” said Stephen Perry, President and CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Hyatt Regency New Orleans with its $ 275 million dollar renovation and the International House near the Children’s Museum are mentioned.

The article goes on to list nonstop flights from several major US cities, including Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and New York.

New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation and the New Orleans Convention Visitors Bureau together promote New Orleans as a city that appeals to all ages. Upcoming family events include Mardi Gras followed by the French Quarter Festival and Jazz Fest.

LivingStone International University Opens in Uganda

LivingStone International University Opens in Uganda

Mbale, Uganda (PRWEB) February 09, 2012

LivingStone International University opened its doors to the students and families of Uganda on Jan. 16, 2012. More than 30 students began their bachelor’s degree programs in Communications and Media Technology, Business Administration and Christian Ministry. “This is the culmination of a 10-year vision including more than six years of focused planning and work,” said Phillip Shero, Interim Vice Chancellor.

Every student has been equipped with a Kindle, along with access to 30 brand new computers and a library with more than 15,000 electronically-catalogued books. “LIU aims to set a new standard for Christian higher education in Africa,” said Shero.

The roots of LIU began with a very effective mission team, some of whom have been in Africa for 30 years. During this time, the team has been involved in planting more than 500 churches in Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan. A successful Bible training work established by the group of missionaries inspired the vision of a Christian university that directs ethical students towards the forefront of change and influence.

According to Ugandan government statistics, up to 35,000 high school graduates per year can’t attend a university, because space isn’t available.

“Fundamentally, we want to make an eternal difference in the life of each student while equipping them to be leaders in all areas of African society,” said Shawn Tyler, University Chancellor. “Through spiritual mentoring and real-world internships, we plan to guide the personal development of each student.”

LIU begins on a campus in the town of Mbale, with plans to build a permanent campus on 56 acres of land already owned by the university. The master-planned permanent campus was designed by Engineering Ministries International and includes pristine, modern buildings to accommodate 4,000 full-time students.

“This is an exciting step for the future of higher education in Africa,” said Craig Smith, Executive Director of LivingStone University Partners, the Fort Worth-based organization that resources LIU.

Inuit Art and Eskimo Art Website Launches New German Pages for Customers in Europe

Inuit Art and Eskimo Art Website Launches New German Pages for Customers in Europe

Montreal, Quebec, Canada (PRWEB) March 27, 2006

Free Spirit Gallery, a Montreal based online art gallery specializing in Inuit art and Eskimo art, is going international by launching new German pages for its website. Overseas art customers located in Germany and other parts of German speaking Europe can now browse through the many beautiful pieces of art from Canada’s Arctic north in German. Since the popularity of Canadian Inuit art and Eskimo art has been growing internationally, the new German version of Free Spirit Gallery’s website will make it easier for buyers to shop for pieces without even leaving Europe. Free Spirit Gallery ships artwork from Canada directly to Germany and other overseas countries.

German tourists have always enjoyed Canada for its natural scenic beauty. The Canadian Rockies have also been quite popular with German skiers in recent years. Canadian Inuit art has been popular acquisitions for the Germans and other Europeans during their travels to Canada. Through Free Spirit Gallery’s website, they can now continue to build their Inuit art collections from home back in Germany and other European countries.

There’s even an informative article in the website about recognizing authentic Inuit artwork from reproductions and fakes. This article in both German as well as English, will help educate tourists and novice collectors about Inuit art so that they can make wise buying decisions without ending up with just cheap tourist souvenirs.

Clint Leung, who created Free Spirit Gallery in 2004, says, “Our website is extremely informative and as more of the European market discovers us, we intend to translate more of our information resource articles into German and perhaps other languages in the future.”

Because of the isolation of the Arctic north, Canadian Inuit artists have always had difficulties in getting their artwork out to the rest of the world. Now with the help of Free Spirit Gallery’s new German website, these talented artists can gain much needed exposure for their beautiful work in Germany, the largest consumer market in Europe.

Travelers seeking out amazing beaches, plenty of attractions, and fabulous weather have flocked to Cancun’s Hotel Zone year after year. And now in 2012, All Inclusive Outlet is introducing 15 new all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun Hotel Zone to its product line. These newly added resorts bring All Inclusive Outlet’s hotel offerings in Cancun to 41 hotels.

According to Kelly Reid, All Inclusive Outlet Travel Consultant, Cancun is one of her favorite destinations to both sell and visit. “The beaches are beautiful, the people are warm and welcoming, and there is a variety of excursions and attractions in the area for both adults and children. It is also the best bargain right now for a quality all-inclusive beach vacation. For the same amount of money, you can get a 5-star luxury resort in Mexico instead of a 3-star budget resort in another destination such as Antigua or Barbados.”

Whether you are looking for an adults-only trip, family vacation, golf retreat, spa getaway, luxury vacation, or a strictly budget-friendly option, All Inclusive Outlet has a resort that is perfect for you.

Family vs. Adults-Only Vacations: Twelve of the newly added resorts are geared toward families, with many having kid’s clubs and activities designed for younger guests. Two of the new offerings, Sens del Mar and the Bel Air Collection allow children, however they mainly offer amenities and activities for adults. Live Aqua Cancun is All Inclusive Outlet’s latest adults-only offering in Cancun.

Luxury Hotels: Those seeking out total luxury should look no further than the newly added Iberostar Cancun, Live Aqua Cancun, The Beloved Hotel, Le Meridien Cancun, CasaMagna Marriott Cancun and the Fiesta Americana Condesa. Several of these hotels have been recognized as AAA Four Diamond-level hotels. This designation by AAA for Live Aqua Cancun, Le Meridien, Fiesta Americana Condesa, and CasaMagna Marriott Cancun establishes that these hotels are upscale in every way, their accommodations are more refined and stylish, and that these hotels “include an extensive array of amenities combined with a high degree of hospitality, service, and attention to detail.” In addition to these newly added resorts, All Inclusive Outlet also offers several other AAA Four Diamond Hotels along with a variety of AAA Five Diamond Hotels.

Budget-Friendly Hotels: For those seeking a more budget-friendly vacation, All Inclusive Outlet now offers the Flamingo Cancun, Krystal Cancun, and the now re-opened and renovated Oasis resorts, which include Grand Oasis Cancun, Grand Oasis Palm, Oasis Cancun, Sens del Mar, and Oasis Palm.

Mid-Range Hotels: With the new offerings, Bel Air Collection Cancun and Westin Cancun fall in the mid-range for cost. The Westin Cancun is a larger resort with 379 rooms, five restaurants, two bars, and four pools compared to the more intimate Bel Air Collection’s 155 rooms, three restaurants, two bars, and one pool.

Activities: Travelers looking for an active vacation at a resort with plenty of activities and amenities should take a look at CasaMagna Marriott Cancun, Iberostar Cancun, Fiesta Americana Condesa, Flamingo Cancun, and any of the Oasis hotels. These resorts offer everything from tennis, aerobics, nearby golf, beach volleyball, dance or language classes, non-motorized watersports, parties, games, and much more.

Golf: Golf enthusiasts who want the convenience of an on-site golf course should look no further than the Iberostar Cancun, which has an 18-hole, par 72 championship course. In addition, the Grand Oasis Cancun and Oasis Cancun offer free greens fees on their nine-hole executive golf course. Other options for golfers staying at other resorts in Cancun include a variety of top golf courses in the area, which are easily accessible by shuttle or a rental car.

Health and Wellness: Most of the resorts in Cancun have an on-site spa or offer spa treatments. However, for those looking for a more zen-like atmosphere with a focus on health and wellness, the mid-size Bel Air Collection offers this type of vacation, as does Le Meridien Cancun, which features a 15,000 square foot world-class spa. Meanwhile, Live Aqua Cancun offers an overall sensory experience with upscale amenities, world-class restaurants, and a variety of fitness and spa treatments.

Knee Osteoarthritis to Increase in Younger Age Groups in Next Ten Years

Knee Osteoarthritis to Increase in Younger Age Groups in Next Ten Years

Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) November 05, 2011

Based on current trends, nearly 6.5 million Americans between the ages of 35 and 84 are expected to be diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis in the next 10 years, according to research presented this week at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago. The study also reports that people as young as 45 to 64 years old will account for more than half of newly-diagnosed cases – increasing the need for total knee replacements and placing an additional burden on the United States health care system.

Senior author of the study, Elena Losina, PhD, PhD; co-director of the Orthopedics and Arthritis Center for Outcomes Research at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and lead investigator of the study comments, “The large number of newly-diagnosed cases of knee osteoarthritis in younger individuals will lead to continued increases in the use of total knee replacement. Furthermore, these data are consistent with the recently observed tripling of total knee replacement use in 45 to 65 year old persons in the U.S.”

Osteoarthritis, or OA as it is commonly called, is the most common joint disease affecting middle-age and older people. It is characterized by progressive damage to the joint cartilage—the cushioning material at the end of long bones—and causes changes in the structures around the joint. These changes can include fluid accumulation, bony overgrowth, and loosening and weakness of muscles and tendons, all of which may limit movement and cause pain and swelling.

Researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital used data from the Centers for Disease Control in a validated computer model (called the OAPol model) of the course of knee osteoarthritis to estimate the number of newly-diagnosed knee OA cases in the U.S. during two decades: the 1990’s and the 2010’s.

Using the OAPol model, the researchers were able to simulate the onset and progression of knee OA in individuals with demographic characteristics similar to U.S.-based population from age 25 until death. Data from the model were combined with CDC population estimates to project the incidence and course of knee OA in the U.S. during the time periods studied.

The researchers found that physician-diagnosed knee OA affects about seven percent of Americans over the age of 45.They estimate that Americans will be diagnosed with knee OA much earlier in life in the 2010s versus the 1990s.In fact, the average age of physician-diagnosed knee OA is projected to fall from age 72 in the 1990s to age 56 in the 2010s – a difference of 16 years. Additionally, they found that Americans who are between the ages of 35 and 84 in the early 2010s are likely to account for nearly 6.5 million new cases of knee OA over the next decade, with ages 45 to 64 accounting for 59 percent of these cases.

The results further revealed that Americans ages 45 – 54 at the beginning of the 1990s would account for an estimated 412,214 newly-diagnosed knee OA cases over the following 10 years. Among this same age group, the study found that in the 2010s, newly-diagnosed knee OA cases over the next 10 years are expected to exceed two million. That means about five percent of all Americans ages 45 to 54 would be diagnosed with knee OA over the next decade of their life – compared to only 1.5 percent, based on the data from 1990s.

“In the last decade, obesity and knee injuries have become more prevalent, possibly contributing to the increase in knee OA in younger adults,” explains Dr. Losina. “These trends toward earlier knee OA diagnosis may have a dramatic economic impact on the U.S. health care system.”

Background/Purpose: Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects about 7% of Americans over the age of 45. Obesity and knee injuries have become more prevalent in recent years, which may contribute to increasing incidence of symptomatic knee OA, particularly in younger age groups. Temporal trends in the age of symptomatic knee OA onset and the resulting public health impact have yet to be studied.

Method: We used the OAPol Model, a validated computer simulation model of the natural history of knee OA, to estimate the age-stratified 10-year incidence of symptomatic physician-diagnosed knee OA during two distinct time periods (the 1990s vs. the 2010s). Symptomatic knee OA incidence data for the 1990s were derived from published literature. Data for the 2010s were derived from the National Health Interview Survey 2007-08. We followed a simulated cohort from age 25 to death to track the onset of symptomatic knee OA. We coupled model output and CDC population estimates from each time period to project the number of incident cases of knee OA in the US population over each 10-year period. We compared ages of OA onset and 10-year cumulative incidence of knee OA for the two time periods.

Result: The mean age of physician-diagnosed knee OA onset fell from 72 ± 12 years (mean ± standard deviation) in the 1990s to 56 ± 18 years in the 2010s. Americans ages 35-84 in the early 2010s were expected to incur 6,475,642 incident cases of symptomatic knee OA over the next decade, with those ages 45-64 accounting for 59% of these cases (Figure). Among Americans who were ages 45-54 at the beginning of the 1990s, an estimated 412,214 incident cases of knee OA were expected over the subsequent 10 years, resulting in a 10-year cumulative incidence of 1.5%. Among people in the same baseline age group in the 2010s, 2,108,881 incident cases of symptomatic knee OA are expected over the next 10 years, a cumulative incidence of 4.8%. The projected number of 10-year incident cases among those ages 65-74 at baseline decreased slightly between the 1990s (1,169,615 cases) and the 2010s (882,997 cases).

Conclusion: Since the early 1990s, the age of onset of physician-diagnosed symptomatic knee OA has shifted dramatically, occurring on average 16 years earlier in life. This trend may reflect temporal changes in the prevalence of OA risk factors, as well as thresholds for patient care-seeking and physician diagnosis of OA. If the current OA incidence trend continues, nearly 6.5 million Americans between the ages of 35 and 84 will be diagnosed with symptomatic knee OA in the next 10 years, with those ages 45-64 accounting for more than half of these incident cases. A resulting spike in the utilization of healthcare, specifically total knee replacements, could have a dramatic economic impact and place additional burden on the healthcare system.
